The Last Dance, Michael Jordan, and me

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

So I finally got a chance to watch The Last Dance, a 10 part documentary about the Chicago Bulls, the characters like Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, Tony Kukoc, John Paxton, Phil Jackson, and of course Michael Jordan.

If you read my About section, I said I want to be the Michael Jordan of Filmmaking in revamping my website, long before this documentary was released. I was a huge Michael Jordan fan growing up.

Minor Spoilers Ahead.

In seeing the documentary, I was so inspired again, not just in basketball, but also at how focused MJ was on his craft to be the best he could be, while elevating the players around him. Even as a kid, I always knew that the players on the bench weren’t even remotely or particularly gifted with ability, size or strength like we see now in the NBA, yes, Luc Longley I remember you too, but they all rose to the occasion when called upon. As much as Jerry Krause was a villain in the movie, he did put also help assemble a great team, it’s too bad he let his ego of feeling under appreciated get in the way. The Bulls also did a disservice to Scottie Pippen, and should have renegotiated his contract mid way. Phil Jackson was smart to end the Bull’s run when he did knowing Michael would have kept going, a good coach knows when it’s time.

Right now, with the world on fire, one of things I appreciated about basketball, and why I love entertainment, is that no matter who your favourite characters are, your favourite team, when you step on to that court, for me it’s on a film set, you forget everything, you go to work, and it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, how old you are, where you are from, what gender, you are there to win. I know in the documentary you didn’t enjoy being a role model, it’s a game you can’t win, but in my record book, you set an example, you backed up your words with action, you were relentless in your pursuit to be the best, so to me, you won a long time ago. Thank you.
